What is the Biomedical Big Data Training Collaborative?
Our VisionOur vision is to cultivate a high-quality, well-informed, freely accessible knowledge and data community effort around training and education in biomedical big data research. BBDTC contains lecture content and hands-on application use cases for biomedical big data training. Our effort will assist teachers by developing and communicating best practices for content development and deployment to a wide-range of trainees, along with associated adaptive learning, assessment metrics, and testing practices. Customizable virtual machines (VMs) that run on a diversity of computational architectures will package hands-on tools, example data and additional assessments. The VMs will ensure standardized software tool environment with their required software dependencies and the necessary test data accessible to a broad community of biomedical researchers, including ones without access to high-performance computing facilities.
Our StrategyOur strategy is to build a learning-module based curriculum to train scientists at all levels in technical biomedical big data skills. Curriculum is modularized to enable trainees to take customizable paths along the end-to-end data-driven biomedical research. Topics to be developed include defining basic concepts in big data, biomedical big data, data access, data standards / interoperability / ontologies, workflows and biostatistics. Field specific content, e.g., metagenomics / sequencing, microscopy, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, etc. will feature prominent scientists and cutting-edge research centers wherever possible. “Virtual field trips” will take the learners on a tour of the facilities where the data is actually coming off the machine.
This site is a resource for education, collaboration, and research. It hosts various resources which will help you learn about biomedical big data research, including Seminars, Courses, Teaching Materials, and more. These resources come from contributors in our scientific community, and are used by visitors from all over the world.
Most importantly, BBDTC offers virtual-machine hosted workflows, and other software tools, which you can download and use locally, or within Amazon Cloud.
